Ourém

The medieval town of Ourem is positioned on a hill, about a km from the new town of Ourem and, in general, marks the hinge between two landscapes: a landscape of limestone and southern mountain ranges, and a landscape of sandstone, mudslides and rivers to the north.

At the top of the hill lies the castle, endowed with a strategic position of the territory surrounding area.

This walled town, with human occupation since pre-history, developed especially in the medieval period from two axes: a military axis and a religious axis. After its recapture from the Moors, the first king of Portugal donated it to his daughter Teresa, who in 1180 gave it the first charter and its coat of arms, giving rise to the coat of Ourem.

During the village elation county head, the third count, Nuno Alvares Pereira, and above all the Fourth Earl D. Afonso (his grandson and the grandson of King John I), printed it great glow.
