Alcochete

Fondée par les arabes sous le nom de "Alcaxete" qui signifie fours et dont l'origine est probablement attribuée aux grands fours servant à cuire l'argile ici présente, Alcochete fut conquise par Afonso Henriques, 1er roi du Portugal, au XIIe siècle.

Au XVe siècle, cette région où abondaient les espèces animales comme le cerf, le sanglier et le loup, était très fréquentée par la noblesse qui y organisait de grandes parties de chasse, et séjournait longtemps dans leurs résidences d'été.

Les marais salants sont la grande richesse naturelle de cette région, Alcochete ayant été pendant très longtemps considérée le plus important centre de production de sel du pays, une activité qui encore aujourd'hui ne cesse d'être fondamentale pour l'économie locale.

Comme presque partout dans le Ribatejo, à Alcochete on élève aussi les chevaux et les taureaux, et la population cultive le goût pour la "fête taurine", qui atteint son apogée aux "Fêtes du Béret Vert et des Salines", qui se tient tous les ans la 2ème semaine d'août, et où les "largadas" (lâchers de taureaux) et les corridas en sont le spectacle le plus caractéristique.

Aux alentours se trouve la Réserve Naturelle de l'Estuaire du Tage, où l'on peut observer plusieurs oiseaux qui traversent cette zone lors de leurs migrations, parmi lesquels les bandes de flamants.
