Trancoso

Avec un passé allant de pair avec l'Histoire du Portugal, Trancoso est une ville protégée par des murailles qui préserve un environnement médiéval dans ses rues étroites et ses maisons en pierre. Le plateau où elle se trouve, à 870 mètres d'altitude, lui confère la position stratégique de défense de la frontière avec l'Espagne ce qui la transforma au Moyen Âge en importante place d'Armes.

L'imposante Porta d'El Rei est l'entrée principale des murailles et aussi un hommage à D. Dinis qui célébra ici son union avec Isabel de Aragão, en 1282, dans la Chapelle de São Bartolomeu. D. Dinis offrit la ville en dot à la Reine Sainte et institua le marché franc, à l'origine du grand marché de Trancoso qui a toujours lieu le 15 août, jour de la Sainte Patronne Notre Dame de Fresta.

Le labyrinthe des rues en pierres nous conduit au centre du village où se trouve le Pilori, au croisement entre la Vila Velha et la Vila Nova. Dans la partie la plus ancienne, on trouve le château très disputé entre les maures et les chrétiens et définitivement conquit par la force de D. Afonso Henriques en 1160, et l'Église de São Pedro, où repose pour l'éternité le mystérieux Bandarra (1500-45), un cordonnier poète qui prophétisa la perte de l'indépendance du Portugal en 1580 et sa restauration en 1640.

C'est dans la Vila Nova que la population s'est établie. Au XVè siècle il existait ici une importante communauté judaïque qui participa beaucoup au développement du commerce. La mémoire de cette époque demeure dans l'architecture des maisons aux deux portes (une large, celle de l'entrée de la boutique, et l'autre étroite, donnant accès à la résidence particulière) et dans la Casa do Gato Negro (sur la Place Luís de Albuquerque), un des édifices les plus emblématiques de la ville identifié comme étant l'ancienne synagogue et la résidence du rabin.

Ici vécut Magriço, un des Douze d'Angleterre, protagoniste d'un épisode historique entre le Portugal et l'Angleterre à la fin du XIVè siècle. C'est également dans cette ville que, en 1809, le Général Beresford installa une base quand il séjourna au Portugal en tant qu'allié contre les invasions napoléoniennes. Cinq ans après, le Roi accorda à Beresford le titre de premier Comte de Trancoso.

Le 29 mai est la date de la commémoration de la Bataille de São Marcos (1385), qui annonce la grande victoire de la Bataille d'Aljubarrota contre la Castille, quand D. João I défendit et consolida l'indépendance portugaise. Ce jour là du pain et des oranges furent distribuées aux enfants sur le haut plateau de São Marcos où la bataille eut lieu car selon la légende les portugais auraient laissé les castillans au "pain et oranges".
