Viana do Castelo

Située près de l'embouchure du Fleuve Lima, à 65 Kms au nord de Porto et à 50 Kms de la frontière de Valença, Viana do Castelo fut fondée au XIIIè siècle par Afonso III, roi du Portugal, qui lui donna le nom de Viana da Foz do Lima.

La mer a toujours été sa raison d'être : elle vint à avoir 70 navires marchands et, à l'époque des Grandes Découvertes (XVè et XVIè siècles), depuis les chantiers de Viana partaient des navires et des caravelles sur les routes des Indes et des Amériques, et revenaient chargés de sucre, de bois noir, d'ivoire et autres trésors exotiques. João Álvares Fagundes, originaire de Viana fut le pionnier de la navigation à Terre Neuve, sur l'Atlantique nord. Sans le savoir, il allait tracer la voie, au culte de la morue et aux nombreuses façons de la manger au Portugal.

Au milieu du XXè siècle une flotte de morutiers allait être construite aux chantiers de Viana do Castelo pour la pêche à la morue dans les eaux froides des mers du nord. Le tombeau de João Álvares Fagundes se trouve dans la Chapelle de Santo Cristo, à l'intérieur de l'Église Matrice de Viana do Castelo.

Jusqu'au XVIè siècle, le bourg fut exclusivement au peuple, la noblesse ne pouvant pas s'installer ici. En lui ouvrant enfin ses portes, Viana s'enrichit avec les glorieux Palais, les églises et les couvents, les fontaines publiques et autres fontaines qui constituent un héritage patrimonial notable, digne d'une visite. En 1848 la reine D. Maria II éleva Viana au rang de ville et lui donna le nouveau nom de Viana do Castelo. Jolie ville, extravertie et joyeuse, Viana do Castelo a su conserver la richesse de ses traditions de racine populaire.

Les Fêtes de Senhora d´Agonia, l'un des plus beaux pèlerinages du Portugal, sont une explosion de joie à ne pas manquer.
