Au centre même du Portugal, se dressant sur un agréable haut plateau entouré de chaînes de montagnes escarpées et des fleuves Vouga et Dão (sur les rives desquels naît l'excellent vin de Dão), Viseu reçut en 1993 le prix Quercus pour la conservation unique de ses espaces verts.

L'imposante cathédrale en granit couronne le haut plateau, mais au temps de l'occupation de Rome la population se dispersait dans sa partie la plus basse, où se trouve la Cava de Viriato et le Parc do Fontelo. Au VIè siècle Viseu était une ville épiscopale du règne suève. On raconte que le dernier roi des Goths, D. Rodrigo mourut ici et que ses cendres sont conservées dans un modeste tombeau en granit, à l'intérieur de l'église de S. Miguel de Fetal.

Dans le trouble de la période de la Reconquête Viseu se trouva tantôt aux mains des Musulmans, tantôt aux mains des Chrétiens, mais en 1058 Fernando Magno de Leão la reconquit définitivement pour la Croix. D. Teresa, mère de D. Afonso Henriques lui donna son premier foral en 1123, confirmé par son fils en 1187, lorsqu'il était déjà premier roi du Portugal. En 1383, avec la mort du roi D. Fernando I et une fois la crise dynastique installée, Viseu fut saccagée par les troupes de Castille.

De nouveaux murs de défense furent construits par D. João I (r.1383-1433), achevés seulement en 1472 par son petit-fils D. Afonso V. De cette enceinte "afonsina" de Quatre cent il ne reste que quelques fragments intégrés au tissu urbain et deux portes, celle du Soar et celle des Cavaleiros. Située au centre d'une région de pâturages de montagne, avec un intense mouvement de troupeaux transhumants, c'est à Viseu qu'avait lieu la grande foire annuelle du bétail, à l'origine de la foire de S. Mateus, un des grands évènements qui animent la ville tous les ans en août/septembre.

À partir du XVIè siècle la butte où se trouve la cathédrale est devenue le centre de développement du bourg. Ce siècle témoigna du développement d'une culture artistique notable qui atteignit son apogée grâce à Vasco Fernandes (Grão Vasco), dont l'oeuvre exemplaire est conservée au Musée Grão Vasco.

Le charme de Viseu se reflète dans l'atmosphère médiévale de ses rues, dans les palais ayant appartenus à la noblesse et aux hommes d'Église, ennoblis par l'imposant granit, dans les places et les jardins arborés, dans le patrimoine sur les nombreuses époques, témoignages de sa vitalité.
